GoHighLevel for Life Coaches: A Course Funnel & Automation Case Study
How I connected a video introduction, mini-course sales, AI-generated follow-up, and a one-to-one coaching upsell inside GoHighLevel.
For this life-coaching project, I built a journey that introduced prospects to the coach, offered an initial mini-course, and promoted a one-to-one consultation as a subsequent purchase. Everything ran inside GoHighLevel.

The requirement
Introduce the coach before the next commitment.
The coach offered different courses, with a one-to-one consultation available as an upsell. The funnel needed to support that offer structure.
After sharing their information, prospects reached a video addressing the challenges relevant to the courses. They could then purchase a mini-course.
Email automation supported prospects who had not purchased. A separate sequence introduced the consultation offer to course customers. Each purchase needed to change which messages the customer received.
What I built
A connected course-to-consultation journey
Lead capture and a video introduction
Form submissions added contacts to the lead list and directed them to a video page. The video introduced the life coach and discussed the challenges the offer addressed. A call-to-action button led towards the mini-course.
Email sequences supporting the courses
Form submission also started follow-up introducing the course offers and their relevant challenges. Reminder emails encouraged prospects to take the next step. The initial sales journey focused on a course purchase; one-to-one coaching was a subsequent offer.
AI-generated messages within engagement branches
Workflow conditions checked recorded engagement with earlier emails. Contacts with recorded opens entered one branch; those with no recorded opens entered another. AI generated the follow-up according to the instructions for that branch. Recorded opens were routing signals, not proof that someone read or understood the message.
Course purchase and post-purchase communication
Buying a course stopped the emails prompting that purchase and started post-purchase follow-up. Checkout, videos, courses, and course access were all managed inside GoHighLevel, alongside the pipelines and automation.
A one-to-one consultation upsell
Course customers who had not bought a consultation received a separate sequence introducing individual coaching. Messages invited customers who had completed the course and wanted more guidance to consider the consultation. That wording did not imply the system had verified course completion.
Consultation purchase and its exit condition
Once the customer purchased the consultation, consultation-upsell emails stopped. Each offer had its own stopping point: course purchase ended course promotion; consultation purchase ended consultation promotion. No external tools were involved.

Illustrative walkthrough · not live customer activity
A prospect enters the funnel
Form submission adds the contact to the list and directs them to the video page.
Recorded opens → AI follow-up
The workflow selects an engagement branch. AI generates a message using the instructions for that branch.
No recorded opens → alternate AI follow-up
A different branch generates messaging intended to encourage engagement. Opens are a signal, not proof of reading.
Purchases change the communication
Customers do not need to finish every promotional email before buying. Each purchase stops promotion for its corresponding offer.

Triggers and outcomes
Each offer has a clear stopping point
| Event or condition | System action |
|---|---|
| Form submitted | Contact added to the lead list; follow-up begins and the video page is shown. |
| Video introduction | Presents the coach and mini-course call to action. |
| Course consideration | Course information and reminder emails support the purchase decision. |
| Recorded email engagement | Workflow branches route the contact; AI generates the message within the selected branch. |
| Course purchased | Course-promotion emails stop; post-purchase follow-up begins. |
| Consultation not yet purchased | The consultation-upsell sequence continues. |
| Consultation purchased | Consultation-upsell emails stop. |
An example of the experience
A prospect becomes a course customer
A prospect submits the form and reaches the video page. They watch the coach’s introduction and explore the mini-course offer, but do not purchase immediately.
The emails follow up with more information. Recorded engagement determines the workflow branch, where AI generates the next message using the configured instructions.
When the prospect purchases a course, the course-promotion emails stop. The post-purchase sequence introduces the consultation offer. If they later buy the consultation, that upsell sequence stops too.

My takeaway
Each offer needs its own follow-up rules.
A course purchase and a consultation purchase represent different decisions. Each offer needed an entry point, relevant communication, and an exit condition.
AI helped generate messages within the process. Workflow conditions and purchase events supplied the structure that kept those messages connected to the customer’s stage.
